10/28: New at the library this week

Books:
  • All mortal flesh / Julia Spencer-Fleming — Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne's first encounter with Clare Fergusson was in the hospital emergency room on a freezing December night. A newborn infant had been abandoned on the town's Episcopal church steps. If Russ had known that the church had a new priest, he certainly would never have guessed that it would be a woman. Not a woman like Clare. (Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne Series, #5)
  • Act of treason / Vince Flynn — It's a gorgeous autumn day in Georgetown. The Democratic candidates for president and vice president of the United States are dutifully glad-handing voters and the media outside a grand estate where a national security conference has just been held, bringing together the world's greatest minds to discuss the issues that are threatening the country. It's American politicking at its best. That's when all hell breaks loose.
  • The collectors / David Baldacci — The assassination of the Speaker of the House sets the members of the Camel Club in a race to prevent a silent yet bloody coup in Washington (Camel Club Series, #2)
  • Maternal fitness : preparing for the marathon of labor / Julie Tupler — If you're newly pregnant, you're probably watching your diet carefully, getting plenty of rest, and preparing for the arrival of your new baby. You're also thinking about the big day itself and what the experience of labor will be like. Even if you're following a regular fitness program, you'll want to do everything you can to strengthen and prepare your body for the rigors of labor. Maternal Fitness features clearly illustrated exercises that focus specifically on the muscle groups you'll use throughout labor, especially the transverse abdominals - the stomach muscles that play a critical role during delivery.
  • The old iron road : an epic of rails, roads, and the urge to go West / David Haward Bain — From Omaha to San Francisco, Bain and his family retraced the entire route of the first transcontinental railroad. Following abandoned railroad tracks and the traces of old wagon trails, cruising down back roads and main streets, they discovered the deep, restless, uniquely American spirit of adventure that connects our past to our present.
  • Drawing on the right side of the brain : a course in enhancing creativity and artistic confidence / Betty Edwards — the world's most widely used drawing instruction book
  • Voices of South Africa : growing up in a troubled land / Carolyn Meyer — The author recounts her visit to South Africa where she interviewed numerous young people, both black and white, to find out what growing up is like in a country torn apart by racial strife. (Age Range: 12)
